QIMMIQ AND UKALIQ

Project description

  • NAME : Qimmiq and Ukaliq
  • BOAT TYPE : Tugboats
  • DELIVERY : 2014
  • SERVICES USED : Architecture | Construction

Qimmiq and Ukaliq are two identical tugs custom designed to pull barges in the Arctic Ocean, largely for the purpose of delivering goods to northern villages.

Improvements to facilitate sailing

After the success of Tuulik and Tuugaalik , a pair of tugs launched in 2015, NEAS Inc. requested that work continue with two new tugs: Qimmiq (“dog”) and Ukaliq (“Arctic hare”).

These vessels featured improvements over the previous design. We chose a flat deck and raised the wheelhouse to facilitate sailing; this prevents some water from making it onto the main deck. These choices were used in the design of the next six tugs, which were delivered in 2019 and 2020.
